The Australian 1966 Silver 50c coin was the first mintage of the 50 cent currency denomination initially struck in February of 1966. Comprised of 80% silver, its metal value quickly eclipsed its face value. A total of 36.5 million 50c coins were minted in 1966, after which no further 50c coins were produced until 1969, when the composition and design was amended to the modern Dodecagonal shape made of Copper & Nickel.
